I decided to start this blog because I find Facebook too trivial and limiting for me. Sorry if that sounds snobby, but I need more space and more depth to what I communicate. I thought it would be fun to write an occasional blog, letting people know what is happening with me. I encourage you to read and respond, or just lurk, if you prefer.
I started the new year with a real bang. I found out that if you pour water into a Pyrex dish that you have just taken from the oven, it will explode into a zillion pieces. Luckily, I was unhurt, but it really got my attention. My friend the physics teacher is probably shaking his head right now.
Because I am newly retired, I am continuing my quest to figure out what to do with the rest of my life. I just finished reading a great book: Tough Transitions: Navigating Your Way Through Difficult Times. These aren't tough times for me; I find them very exciting, actually. I am having the opportunity to explore and reinvent how to structure the rest of my life. However, the book was still very thought-provoking and interesting. I recommend it.
Tomorrow I start back tutoring my student at the Literacy Council. He is doing very well. When I tested him at the end of the year, he had gone up almost two grade levels in the three months we have been working together. That's pretty good for someone who didn't know the sounds of his letters in October. It is fun to use the skills I have honed over so many years, but not have to grade papers every night.

Thanks for the blog. No, you are not a "snob". I don't really like facebook, either. It will be good to be able to come here to visit.
Mahalo, Cheryl ;o)
Nice. I'm agree on facebook, ...for my money it's just another (and limited) form of e-mail, so I don't bother with it much. Actually, I don't know why it's there. Seems redundant, given the existence of e-mail.
Look forward to reading your blog! You always have something insightful to say. Sorry I missed you and Alan last week!
Thanks for the invite! I'm excited to see what's going on in your life.
Nice, I'll have to read some of the same books.
Happy about your blog & being invited.
Now I know: always feared cracking hot pyrex, but had not considered exploding. Glad no injury.
Teaching one to read is such a gift! Keep enjoying this use of your valuable skills.
