Fall in the Smokies

We did our annual fall weekend with our friends Rick and Doreen a couple of weeks ago. Like last year, we opted for a cozy cabin, rather than camping--which was good because it was very rainy on Friday and chilly the other days.  We went to Townsend (the quiet side of the Smokies), steering clear of the hoopla in Gatlinburg. It turned out great.  We had a wonderful time: hiking, enjoying the beautiful fall scenery, and spending time with our friends.  The only bad experience was getting in gridlock traffic on the loop in Cade's Cove on Sunday afternoon.  We should have known better than to go to the most popular place in the Smokies at the height of the fall color!
