About noon yesterday, it was like a switch got turned, and Alan was back. He started having rational conversations and asking questions about what had happened. He had no recollection of all the weeks he had been in the hospital. Everything was a fuzzy, confusing blur to him. I gave him the major highlights, but will fill in details as time goes on. He still has a very hoarse voice and all the same issues with swallowing, etc. He continues on iv's, tube feeding, and is on multiple medicines, but his strength is much better. He didn't have to take meds for head pain today. Tomorrow, I hope that the pain stays away and that he will be able to do PT and swallowing therapy. If we can get the temperature and pain issues to stay away, we may be able to make some headway toward getting to rehab. When we talked about it today, he started singing, "I'm not going to rehab."
He is delighted to spend time with nephew Paul Bliese, who is the night shift person for a few days. Paul has a great sense of humor, which helps Alan forget his troubles, I think.
Hope the turnaround isn't temporary. I am afraid to get my hopes up too much.
