We didn't have a chance to get out in the trailer until late October, after we got back from our other travels that I told you about before. By then, it was cold, so we needed to run the heating system to keep the pipes from freezing. So we decided to spend five days at Roan Mountain State Park during the week before Halloween. Roan Mountain is only about two hours away, and it is one of our favorite places to go to camp and hike.
We didn't know that the park has this huge Halloween celebration in the campground. People decorate their trailers elaborately, and between six and seven hundred children in costume come through trick or treating. The park has a bonfire with free marshmallows and hot dogs. We showed up unaware that this was such a big deal, but we were able to join in and have lots of fun without having to decorate our trailer, which was a long ways away from all the hubbub.

Alan's new favorite picture of me, half awake with my morning coffee, inside Freddie. He calls this "Rhoda in repose." |
It was chilly at 5007 feet, but I had on warm clothes, so was fine. |

The falls is interesting because it comes off two cliffs at right angles. |

Looks like it was a lovely trip... and 'Freddie' appears to be just what the doctor ordered for you two for proper 'luxury camping out' (I still can't believe you guys camping in a tent with the temps where they get to some nights). Thanks for sharing the pictures... Neat trip! BTW, probably in a way hiking when cold is, like motorcycling when cold: much preferable to doing such when the temps are 90+ in the summer. You just layer more stuff, but in summer there's only so much you can remove before the LEOs get you for what they like to term 'indecent exposure'--and besides, even should that be the case one would still, I imagine, be hotter than dancing on a griddle.
