- Alan's dad Bill Gamble had his 88th birthday on March 13. Susie and Charlotte came to town for the celebration. He got lots of great cards from many friends and relatives, and an electric blanket to keep him warm.

- We've had a beautiful spring. The daffodils that Pete gave us for a wedding present continue to multiply and be gorgeous. Now, the dogwoods and fruit trees are blooming.
- Unfortunately, spring also brought out the carpenter bees that have plagued our deck ever since Alan built it. We have tried all kinds of things, including swatting them with badminton rackets. This year, Alan finally found an effective way to trap them. The traps he built caught a large number in just one day. The directions are below if anyone is interested. However, the directions don't tell you how to get rid of them from the jar! How to make carpenter bee trap
- People have been asking Alan what he thinks about the movie Whiplash, about the sadistic drum teacher. This New Yorker review pretty much sums up his thoughts:
- We will be getting the trailer out of storage this week to de-winterize it and get it ready for our first trip. We'll spend a week in Huntsville at Monte Sano State Park. There are a lot of things in the area that we have wanted to see, and good hiking, too. Of course, there is the added advantage of being able to spend time with the Spear clan.
- We are starting to plan for our longer trip, which will be in July-August. There will be a "Bliese" family reunion at Dillon State Park in Ohio July 13 - 17. Then, Alan and I are thinking of going on to Michigan, especially the UP, then on to Wisconsin, so Alan can see where I lived when I was a child. Any suggestions for "must see" places in that area are requested. Pete: Sleeping Bear Dunes is already on the list. I remember you telling us about it.
- I added a new book to my list of recommended books: Living the Secular Life, by Phil Zuckerman.
