My exuberance related to Alan's condition on our birthday should probably be tempered a bit. I may have led you to believe that he is well enough to have visitors, which he is not. He is still in ICU, where only two family members at a time are allowed. Plus, he really isn't in a condition to see people--unable to talk above a hoarse whisper, often spending much time searching for the words he wants to say, and giving up in frustration. I spend 12 hours a day with him, and often I can't figure out what he wants or needs. Other times, what he says is completely lucid. You just never know.
He is also extremely weak and tires easily. Today, they got him out of bed for the first time in a couple of weeks and put him into a special chair to sit up After 21 days in the hospital, he is unable to stand, even with help. The special chair they put him in completely reclines like a bed. Four people slid him from his hospital bed to the chair, which then was adjusted to sit up. He tolerated that for about an hour and a half. Then, they had to reverse the process to get him back in bed.
So, he still has a long way to go before he will be able to have visitors. I have been bringing cards to the hospital to read to him, though, so cards and notes would be most appreciated. Send them to our address: Alan Gamble; 2333 Woodridge Avenue; Kingsport, TN 37664. Many thanks to those of you who have already sent cards.
I am deeply grateful for all the kind e-mails and offers of assistance. The outpouring has been so wonderful. However, right now, I really don't need anything. Because I have the 7 - 7 day shift at the hospital, I usually eat lunch and dinner there, so I don't need food or grocery shopping. The food isn't terrible. They have a nice salad bar.
I will continue to keep you updated and will certainly let you know when he is up to having visitors.

Thanks for the update, Rhoda, and for keeping us posted. We're sorry to hear how slowly things seem to be going, Our best to you both during this very tough and trying time! We think of you two and Art as well, constantly. I still play Abraham sometimes and yell out of foolish habit at the probably non existent 'man upstairs' to get off his bum and help. I wish such things were as effective as the superstitious like to imagine, but good medical help I've concluded is the very best hope for future wellbeing. Sounds like that is what you have! Be well and take care of yourself too! Give Alan a gentle hug from us both!
