Pyrex Warning

I thought that I was the only one who had experienced an exploding Pyrex dish, but it seems that it is something to be concerned about. (For my experience, see January 4 entry in Archive.)  The most recent (January 2011) Consumer Reports says that almost 12,000 people have had to go to the ER due to Pyrex dishes exploding.  Many had horrible cuts to their faces and eyes.  I encourage you to read the article.  However, in the meantime, take these precautions:
  1. Preheat oven before putting in dish.
  2. Don't use in oven over 450 degrees.
  3. Don't pour liquids into the hot dish (like I did).
  4. Don't put hot dish onto a smooth cooktop, even with the burners off. (I did that, too.)
  5. Don't put hot dish on or in anything wet, even a wet towel.  All of the dishes in the Consumer Reports experiments exploded when put on a wet area on a countertop.
  6. DO put the hot dish on dry towels or potholders when you take it out of the oven.
I was lucky in that I wasn't hurt, but others weren't so lucky.  Be careful!

Note:  I used Pyrex generically.  These warning go for all Pyrex type dishes, even if they are made by another company, like Anchor.
