A pileated woodpecker flew into our front picture window today, breaking the storm window and seriously startling us. It was knocked out for a while, but gradually came to and flew off, apparently ok. For those of you unfamiliar with the pileated, it is a very big bird. I have attached a link below. (If you look at link, use "back" arrow to return to this blog.) We are always having problems with birds flying into that window. We will have to investigate what we can do to help them see the window. If any of you have suggestions, let me know.

I have agreed to be the chair of the board of the Sullivan County Imagination Library for next year, so I have been reading books to try to figure out what I have gotten myself into. It will be quite a challenge--an all-volunteer board, no paid staff, and a $75,000 a year budget that we will have to raise in order to send out free books to about 5,000 kids each month. I am very open to suggestions from those of you who have been on boards and/or had to raise money for a non-profit. Taking this on is scary business for me.
Alan is in the process of painting our upstairs bathroom. We embarked on this redecoration project when a light bulb burned out on the medicine chest. It started a chain of events: light bulb couldn't be replaced because socket was dead; socket couldn't be replaced because you had to take down the medicine chest to get to the socket; taking down medicine chest means we can replace it with one that doesn't have crazy electrical stuff; new medicine chest means we could repaint walls and take down border we don't like. You get the picture.

Wow! I'm so glad the bird wasn't killed. Sorry though you all got a startle and some broken glass. Rhoda, for years I've been using a static cling web called a "Warning Web" and have had no bird crashes at all. Here is a link to it: http://www.drollyankees.com/hproducts/accessories/Warning-Web-wwm.html
Hope this helps!

We get the occasional feathered bomber who hits our dining room french doors figuring s/he can fly straight through the house and out the living room windows. Never a Crow sized one like a Pileated though. There's always a strange 'thunk' and we find the little fellow (fortunately, little!) usually toes up on the patio for awhile before again taking off sadder but, we hope wiser--except for robins who are the dumbest birds around, but that's another story. Rosemary also heard that putting a faux spiderweb on the window helps, but we've never tried it, probably because we haven't hunted for one, and like the clear view out the window anyway, but it might work if such "4 engined" bombers as Pileated Woodpeckers insist on trying to fly through. Bon chance!
