Jason's Dilemma
The Chinese student I work with at the Literacy Council came in all worried today. "I have a problem," he said. It seems that his cousin, who is in elementary school here in Kingsport, came home with a packet of official-looking papers. Since Jason is the only adult in his family who sort of speaks English, he was given the task of interpreting what the school system was trying to convey. "My cousin is going to have to go to another class, and we don't know why!" When I looked at the papers, I realized the problem. This was his final report card of the year. He had made all A's, B's, and S's, and he had passed to the next grade! His family didn't understand how the school system worked here in the U.S.
