Conference + trip

I spent Thursday and Friday at Greensboro College, NC at a ProLiteracy conference on "Applying Research in Reading Instruction for Adults." It was informative and invigorating. The presenter was from the National Institute for Literacy, so she really was knowledgeable about the recent research. I will now have to figure out how to bring the information back to the local literacy council where I volunteer.

The leader of the North Carolina group that sponsored the conference asked me to do a workshop at their institute next year. (I guess she liked the comments I made from time to time. All those years of experience teaching reading and reading the research gave me a practical perspective on what was being said.) It made me feel good to know that all that knowledge and experience still in my head may be put to some use to help others be better reading teachers for adults.

I am deep into planning for our trip to Kansas, North and South Dakota, and Yellowstone. We will be gone from July 9 to mid-August. The trip will start in Kansas at a Bliese/Grauerholz family reunion, where I will see all my immediate family, as well as many other relatives. Then, we will go to North and South Dakota because those are the only two states of the 50 states that I haven't visited yet. I wanted to check those off before I checked out. We will spend a lot of the time in the Yellowstone/Tetons area: camping, hiking, backpacking, sightseeing.

When in open season, shot, skinned, ground, spiced, stuffed in casings, and properly smoked, they make very good balony ...probably due to the variety of peoples' flowers, apples, chestnuts, and vegetable gardens they consume.

We've had lots of rabbits eating plants...veggies and flowers right off the pots on the porch. Have had deer in the yard, but they seem to move on. Must not like what we have here.
To date we have not had much response from many folks about their coming for the reunion, so hopefully more will respond in the next week or so. Dolores

Congratulations on being asked to lead a workshop on literacy. Glad the two days in Greensboro were worthwhile.
Our travel plans have been altered. We will probably drive straight to Kansas with maybe a stop at some historic sight(s) along the way. We decided several days of driving behind slow drivers might not be that much fun on the Lincoln Highway. Rosemary

I've been behind looking at the blog. Wonderful that you have been asked to do the workshop. You have a lot to teach the teachers. Susie
